More renewable energy is set to come from Western Australia’s leading wind farm.
Collgar Wind Farm (Collgar) is proud to announce it has increased its potential generation to almost 800 gigawatt hours a year, at full power this is enough renewable energy to supply 160,000 average Western Australian homes.
Collgar is a $750m renewable energy project located 25km south-east of Merredin in Western Australia and produced its first energy on 14 May 2011. The wind farm is built over a land envelope of 18,000 hectares and comprises 111 wind turbines with a total power production capacity of 222MW.
The wind farms generation capacity was originally de-rated to 206MW for operational reasons, however Collgar has since completed significant technical works to re-instate the 222MW generation capacity. Substantial software upgrades and aerodynamic improvements have been undertaken to increase its performance, cementing Collgar as the largest wind farm in Western Australia.
The wind farm generates and delivers clean, renewable electricity into the SWIS each year, thereby making a major contribution to Western Australia’s greenhouse gas reductions. At full power, the wind energy created displaces approximately 0.6 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide per year, equivalent to taking approximately 210,000 cars off the road each year or the equivalent carbon reduction of planting 9 million trees.
Collgar is also proud to be ranked by GRESB as the 2021 global renewable power sector leader for Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) performance late last year.
Collgar CEO, Thomas Scott-Morey said ‘Collgar is committed to operational excellence and increasing its renewable energy production. We pride ourselves on being a leading edge wind farm in Western Australia.’
Collgar Wind Farm is wholly owned by the Retail Employees Superannuation Trust (Rest). Rest is one of the largest profit-to-member industry superannuation funds in Australia, with over 1.8 million members and around $66 billion in funds under management (as at 30 June 2021). Rest was established in 1988 and is open to all Australians. For more information visit www.rest.com.au .
